A simple argument – ‘Manual Testing’ & ‘Manual Testers’ are two separate entities. Agree that ‘Manual Testing is NOT dead’, and it never will. But what about Manual Testers?
Recently in an interview I was asked ‘Why do you love Testing?’ This got me thinking…How will you feel if you bought a new smartphone at a high price only to find a fault when used? Frustrated. Disappointed. Cheated. Angry. Sad? Yeah! A tester’s job is to prevent you feeling all those negative aura 🙂 What is your reason to pursue Testing as a career?
Automation is mostly employed for regression, i.e. to gauge the impact of changes on ‘already-working’ functionality. The same Manual test cases are automated and executed. Automation is for confirmation. What if you want to find issues/defects? Yeah! Manual testing is the first approach. After all, end-user is not a scripted machine. Simulating end-user behavior, testers explore the application with some alternate flows & on-the-fly data.
There are lot of people who have Manual testing experience. When there is a walk-in interview you could see thousands of people with more experience than you have. So you have to differentiate yourself from others by adding extra skills to your resume. In a world where the consumer expects fast-paced delivery, and solutions must support a myriad of devices and platforms, manual testing simply doesn’t enable the delivery pace that the market expects. The rise of automated testing in response to this has been rapid. Are you attempting a switch from Manual Testing to Test Automation? This transition won’t come overnight. It takes months/years to lay the groundwork.
Agile, Continuous Integration and Continuous Delivery methodologies have evolved in favor of delivering the software faster. Software Test automation blends perfectly with these methodologies for accelerating the time to market. In an agile business, automation is becoming an essential process. Companies are now taking advantage of automation testing tools to increase their efficiency and productivity. Automation is frequently evangelized as the cure-all of software quality woes. Some of the benefits that accrue from automated tests include test reusability, repeatability and coverage besides the savings on effort, time and cost it takes for execution (compared to manual testing). However it’s NOT the answer for everything. Test automation, while being able to improve numerous aspects of software development, has limitations that developers and quality assurance teams should be aware of from the start. Understanding these limitations of automation testing will help us devise an efficient & effective automation strategy.
Quality – Why is this word so important for your software? Software teams today involve a number of people: developers, testers, support engineers, designers, product managers, and executive stake holders. A low quality software impacts all of these or in other words everyone in the team is responsible for the quality of software delivered. When we look into the overall effectiveness or cost manual testing still have a pivotal role to play. Unfortunately, very little discussion is only happening on how to improve efficiency of manual testing instead most of discussions are happening on how to increase the level of automation. Many of us would advocate the fact that Manual Testing is no longer needed, and I know it well why they think so. It is mostly because of the drawbacks and challenges associated with Manual Testing.
As discussed in our earlier article Manual vs. Automation Testing – on a high level there are basically two methods to complete the software verification & validation – Manual and Automation testing.
